Norton (Symantec) Gets It Right

By Chad A. Johnson · November 1, 2007

It has always puzzled me why security software companies sell their products and services the way they do. Why do I have to purchase a security suite and a subscription at the same time and be stuck with that software version until the end of my subscription?
Norton (Symantec) has changed all of that by placing the emphasis on the subscription. Now, when you purchase a Norton product, you can upgrade the software version for the life of your subscription. What a brilliant idea!

When I found out about this, I immediately went to the Norton Product Upgrade Center to get my free upgrade. The Norton Product Center determined which upgrades were available to me and installed them. My Norton Internet Security 2007 was upgraded to the 2008 version with no charge.

This new business practice makes much more sense. I have always frowned upon purchasing 2 or 3 year security subscriptions. It saves money, but what if the next version runs smoother or protects against new threats better. You no longer have to be concerned about this when buying a Norton product.

The next time you have to purchase a security suite subscription, go with Norton and go for a long term subscription. It will save you money in the long run.

    Sorry Chad,

    Norton DOESN’T get IT.

Norton is that Crappiest virus software out there, McAfee isn’t second to crappiest.

It doesn’t matter that they now allow upgrades or subscriptions.

Norton is a horrible product that only causes pain and a horribly slow computer.

NOD32 from ESET is the only way to go.

Sorry for my rant but if I had a penny for every norton problem i ran into (including not catching virus’) i would be filty rich.

    Loren,

Sorry that you have had such bad luck with Norton. Personally, I have had a great experience with their products. I do know what you mean about the slowing on computers when it came to their earlier versions of Internet Security, but that hasn’t been my experience with 2007 or 2008.

Outside of my own experiences, PC Mag and PC World have consistently put the Norton products at the top of their ranking based on their independent testing. In my book, those are 2 very good recommendations.

I half agree with Loren, Norton products are great for people who get paid to provide tech support. And I used to live in the town where they are one of the largest employers, so I’ve had the chat with a few of their employees.

When I heard from someone who worked with large corporate servers/mainframes that Trend Micro is the company to watch, I tried out PC Cillin and haven’t looked back. It’s very user friendly even for non-tech people and has done a great job for me.

I’m not sure if I expressed the true point of my article well enough.

My article was about the new business practice of Symantec that allows you to upgrade to the latest software versions for free, so long as your subscription has not expired.

I am well aware that many computer users have strong feelings about the security software that they choose. My hope is that McAfee, Trend Micro, Panda, Zone Alarm, and all of the rest of the security software companies will follow Symantec’s lead.

Interesting…I’ll have to check it out further.

Got something to say?
