Best of MyTechOpinion – 2008

Well, 2008 was a wild ride for us here at MTO. Reggie found himself in a new job, Director of Social Media at Cyberhomes. Chad’s budding blog business boomed (you know how I love good alliteration)! And I took home a Major Award (sorry, too many viewings of A Christmas Story). Well, let’s just say it’s nice to be recognized for working hard. And a little recognition, along with overwhelming support from readers like you, is all the motivation we need to take MTO to the next level in 2009!

If you haven’t already noticed, we’ve already begun tweaking MyTechOpinion.  Even the slightest nuance is important to us (just check out our comment stream). We will keep you posted on the new additions coming your way…starting with our latest add, Facebook Connect. Join the MyTechOpinion community and take advantage of the perks… like the ability to add all your social networks to comments made on MTO posts.

Go Green and Save Money

It is a wonderful thing when going green can save you money, especially if there are no costs involved. Reducing power consumption is a great way to do just that.

One of the easiest ways to save power is to configure the power settings of your computer. By putting the computer to sleep when not in use, it can save quite a bit on the power bill.

Verdiem’s Edison PC Power Management Software makes configuring your Windows’ power scheme a breeze. This program is being offered for free by the Microsoft Environment division.

The Edison software provides an incredibly simple way to control when to shut down monitors, hard drives and put the entire computer to sleep. As you move a single slider from “Save Less” towards “Save More”, a chart updates the annual savings in money, energy and CO2 for that setting.

Issuu SmartLook: Turning Downloadable Files into Attractive Online Publications

When you share files on your website or blog, how do you have your visitors access them? The easiest method is to simply supply a link, and have them download the file and open it locally on their computer. Although with this method there is always the possibility of an incompatible program type. You could also manually embed the file each time using sites like Slide or Scribe.

Both methods work, but I have an exciting new option for you that will render your documents into an elegant and flowing online publication. Issue has a launched a new free tool called SmartLook; and it’s very easy to setup. Start by visiting: Issuu.com/smartlook and add your domain name. Issuu then supplies some embed code to be included immediately above the </body> tag found at the bottom of your website pages.  If you’re using a blog …that will be your Footer file.

Kickstart Your Blog Community with Facebook Connect

My household lives and breathes tech, so I’m sure it comes as no surprise that we take advantage of every opportunity to geek out. In fact, I take the kids to the “Gym Park” (as we call it) so I can burn off my diet of ice cream and peanut butter via kickboxing, the kids get to run wild in Fitzone, and most importantly…Reggie can stay home and DIG! He’s the best Webdigger I know. And if left completely alone on a Saturday morning can turn up some valuable Webgems! This Saturday morning was no different. And when I got home Reggie was working away on integrating Facebook Connect with both MTO and the Cyberhomes Industry Blog.

New Computer Under The Tree?

Tis the season for new technology and many of you will find a new computer under the tree on Christmas morning. What an exciting time.

Before you jump in and start playing with your new toy, there is a fair amount of set-up and maintenance to perform. I know, you can’t wait and why does a new computer need maintenance? Trust me, a bit of work upfront will pay off on the long run. Besides, what else are you going to do on Christmas afternoon?

Did I Social Mention…

If you don’t already track your Web presence with tools like Google Alerts, BudURLS, Yahoo Pipes and others…you really should. Now if you already have enough analytics results to make your head spin, what’s one more….especially if it’s easy to use.

Social Mention is a search engine that scans user-generated content such as blogs, comments, bookmarks, events, news, videos, and microsharing sites like Twitter. You can search all social media sites using keywords, or narrow your search by scanning only blogs, bookmarks, images, etc.  Your aggregated Web results will be displayed for your keyword search and you can sort by date and time.  Other features include RSS feeds for a particular search term(s) and social ranking information.
