Did I Social Mention…

By NikNik · December 8, 2008

If you don’t already track your Web presence with tools like Google Alerts, BudURLS, Yahoo Pipes and others…you really should. Now if you already have enough analytics results to make your head spin, what’s one more….especially if it’s easy to use.

Social Mention is a search engine that scans user-generated content such as blogs, comments, bookmarks, events, news, videos, and microsharing sites like Twitter. You can search all social media sites using keywords, or narrow your search by scanning only blogs, bookmarks, images, etc.  Your aggregated Web results will be displayed for your keyword search and you can sort by date and time.  Other features include RSS feeds for a particular search term(s) and social ranking information.

With Social Mention, you can easily monitor your social rank on the Web, or specifically for blogs, comments and other media. For example, I entered the search term “Nicole Nicolay” and scanned only blogs which yielded a social rank score of 15/100 with 1 mention every 4 hours.  I then scanned only microblogs and a score of 100 was returned. Yippee! But when scanning all social media sites I was kicked back down to a score of 20. Obviously I spend a lot of time microsharing! Anyway, this is a helpful feature…but it would be far more meaningful when trending monthly or annually. You’ll notice the results vary based on your Web activity and timing.

Here are some major BENEFITS of using Social Mention:

  • Track what people are saying about you or your business
  • Identify your Web space…or social rank
  • Identify sites your search has a presence on
  • Easily subscribe to your aggregated Web results
  • Social Media Marketing planning/trending

GETTING STARTED TIP: Real estate professionals can get started with Social Mention by simply visiting the site, searching their name and business, and then subscribing to the RSS feed.  Results are then delivered to you for seamless monitoring of your Web presence!

How do you like it compared to Google Alerts?

Well I haven’t been using Social Mention very long. And I will continue to use Google Alerts.

I guess really depends on how serious you are about monitoring and if you have a preference on results collection. I like receiving Google Alerts as they happen…but also enjoy viewing a larger stream in my reader. Using both just helps me keep current with Web activity a little better than I had before. :)

Thanks Nicole, this is awesome! I’ve been looking for a simple, lighweight, cheap/free version of something like this for clients that don’t want to commit to Radian6. Perfect!

  4. Wouldn’t hurt to take a look… I’ve been using Google Alerts and so far that has been working out great. It’s interesting that people will link-back to a post your wrote but forget to mention it to you or trackback to the post. Google Alerts does a good job of picking that up though.

You know what else I noticed that’s pretty cool… The Lijit search widget delivers weekly stats. Included are the various blogs that include you in their blogroll (that was pretty cool to see).
