It is a wonderful thing when going green can save you money, especially if there are no costs involved. Reducing power consumption is a great way to do just that.
One of the easiest ways to save power is to configure the power settings of your computer. By putting the computer to sleep when not in use, it can save quite a bit on the power bill.
Verdiem’s Edison PC Power Management Software makes configuring your Windows’ power scheme a breeze. This program is being offered for free by the Microsoft Environment division.
The Edison software provides an incredibly simple way to control when to shut down monitors, hard drives and put the entire computer to sleep. As you move a single slider from “Save Less” towards “Save More”, a chart updates the annual savings in money, energy and CO2 for that setting.
Edison also allows for your work day schedule to be set to have different power schemes running during work and at night.
This quick download could save $16 a computer per year in power consumption. For a real estate agent with several computers at home, this could be a noticeable savings. For the real estate broker with dozens of computers in the office, this could save hundreds.

Thx for the software and the savings. I'm all about saving coins when it comes to technology around the house and office. Now I need something like that for my big screen TV's.
You are right about the big screen TV. They have to be up there with the refrigerator as the biggest electricity consumption in a home.
Great ideas and software. This is one of the times it is needed most. It's nice to be in the Xmas spirit but it puts an overload on the power companies with all the lights going, appliances, heaters etc. Turning off things not in use is good for us all.
Great post!
Thanks for the tip. Perfect timing for the release of the NAR Green Designation course.
All of these appliances and gadgets add up to some real electricity use! Time to weed them out and figure out how to get rid of those little power adapters too. Thanks for the power management tip.
Andy,
I know what you are saying about those power adapters. All of those cell phone, headset and other chargers plugged in are draining a lot of energy in my household.
