Quite a proclamation on the future of mobile computing. Is it an accurate assumption that many installed iPhone base would willingly switch back?

What Microsoft's Communications Server technology would suddenly emerge to change the playing field?

What are the workflow functions not currently possible with an iPhone? Full keyboard?! UI fail. And as soon as Verizon converts to GSM, I wouldn't be shocked to see an announcement w/Apple. Regardless, swap out SIM, and you'll still be in business.

Remember how nobody would buy either a Blackberry or an iPhone unless it would sync with Exchange? The success of any particular phone depends on Microsoft. However phone hardware and Windows Mobile are becoming so interdependent, Microsoft needs to take a page out of Apple's play book and control both sides. Microsoft is likely to license Communications Server technology to other phone OEMs (to increase adoption of the server software), but not until well after it's own phone has significant market share.

The iPhone as a mobile business device will be squeezed out in the next 12-18 months. Once sales based organizations migrate to Microsoft's Communications Server (from Exchange) what we now call 'email' will seem archaic. The writing is on the wall with Microsoft's purchase of Danger. They are currently building their own version of the iPhone, however the Microsoft phone will have a full keyboard, complete integration with Communications Server and a community of developers designing mobile apps that tie into the technology (ie mobile CRM tools)

The race for the business phone isn't between Palm and Apple. It's between Google's next version of Android (with better integration with Google Apps) and Microsoft (who already owns enterprise email).

The partnerships will be as follows:

Apple - ATT
Google - TMobile
Microsoft - Verizon (although they may open it up to all carriers)

6 months after I get the 3G iPhone they have to pop this one out (soon). Definitely working forward to the video capabilities with this release.

I'm with Jason Berman, the ability to run the apps in the background will be stellar.

Here's the info on 3.0 update
http://www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/

Palm Pre is great for iPhone. Apple needs competition. But don't think Palm has the money or 1st mover advantage to usurp Apple. The community currently pushing application development will be hard pressed to move away from and to Palm w/the ecosystem Apple has created. It's all about the apps.

Agree on AT&T - Outside of my home community (Colorado) Bad service everywhere. It's unbelievable. If Apple re-ups exclusivity w/AT&T, they should demand more investment into system-wide network upgrades.

AWESOME! Looks like I'm finally going to upgrade from my old edge iPhone!!!

My main question is any idea on what will simply be a software upgrade? Like will the 3Gs get video, image/video MMS, etc ?

Any ideas on color options?

Awesome, but totally worthless if AT&T doesn't improve their coverage in San Francisco. As much as we all text and email and do everything, as Realtors we're still on the phone and, I kid you not, every call I receive or make, I'm afraid will get dropped at least once.

iPhone=awesomeness
AT&T=disappointment, despair and frustration!

I do not have a dog in this fight BUT, i think that the Palm PRE will be giving the Iphone and others a real run for your money. New web based operating system and user friendly too.
So thanks for the update and keep us posted.
Blessings

Double the RAM and processing power! This will allow apps to run in the background which will begin to show the value of the device as you use application in tandem to create more content, share more content, use more content. Can't wait!

Jailbreak is completely reversible and offers much more than the ability to use Qik. The Cydia developer community is pushing the envelope on the possibilities for the device. Try it.

I think the $64,000 question should be when will it be available on other networks? I have Verizon and can't get out of my contract and want the iphone! Come on Verizon, get with the program!
