You’re clearly here because you care about your Facebook friends. You want to listen, learn from, help and contribute! I like you already! So brush up on your Facebook “best practices” and make these 5 resolutions to improve your Facebook engagement (if you haven’t already).
(1) No more whining about the timeline…just accept it already. We all know Facebook makes changes, so get used to them. HOW we share will always evolve…but WHAT we share is specific to who we are. It’s time to take responsibility for the communication tool we find so helpful…and so fun!
(2) Stop sharing images with words on them…especially when they’ve been shared 14 other times in your network already. Instead, use the status bar and text, or your own photos to illustrate your thoughts, comical ideas, or motivational phrases.
(3) Don’t encourage bad behavior. If you don’t like how someone continually asks for “likes” then don’t like the post already. If you think its lame when people ask really cheesy questions…then don’t eat the brie. But remember you are on Facebook to be social, right?! So own your interactions…and engage in a way that feels comfortable to you.
(4) Stop overposting!!! You know who you are. And we are tired of your 15 posts a day. It’s annoying…if we want to see you that much we’ll call you and meet for coffee. Blocking and unfriending happens.
(5) Be original. Be who you are…nothing more, nothing less. Share what you are truly passionate about when it comes to work, to family, to kids, to life. Know that most of us enjoy a balance of posts that reflect your interests and yes, your professional life too. BUT rather than offering up self-serving quotations from Brainy Smurf….really…I mean, REALLY…think about how you can help others in the New Year. And stop trying to make everyone happy…you can’t. Focus on your niche expertise.
MyTechOpinion: Pause before you post. (I did, really.) But once you commit…be ready to ROCK it!

<—Guilty, of (1) and (2)…hoping that whining is my 80%!
(3) I’ve seen several gurus asking for likes and encouraging others to do the same..I think I even read that on Hubspot! But I agree it is cheesy and self-promotional.
(5) Funny you should say this..I’ve recently started posting helpful articles for our clients that I haven’t seen anyone else in my real estate sphere post.
Enjoy reading your opinions.
Weird, that is so NOT what I wrote..I said, hoping that whining is my TWENTY and positive encouraging posts is my 80!! Wonder what happened to the rest of it??? Maybe it saw the carets and thought it was html…*sigh*
Woohoo Lynda!!!! Thanks for being real and sharing your thoughts. I remember seeing a statistic that said you’d get more interactions and engagement if you ask for “likes”. Which every once in awhile could be a good strategy. However…you hit the nail on the head! It’s SO self-promotional when people ask for “likes” every single day….just like they ask for retweets. Social media requires balance….and you’ll burn through your social capital really fast if you’re asking for favors everyday. Thanks for weighing in…and keep rockin’ your network with helpful tips and advice!
1) I agree, 2) I agree, 3) I agree, 4) I agree, 5) I agree. Happy holidays to you and your family
Woohoo! Then I’m not crazy!!!! But I did just get called a FB Nazi in a comment stream. Oh well…can’t make ‘em all happy!

This is a great post about using Facebook. Overposting is a pet peeve of mine!!
I know, right?! Dan Zarella’s research (hubspot report) actually suggests contra-competitive timing….posting when its not so crazy so you’re content is actually viewed. He also suggests an average of 1.5 posts per day (round up or down). But overposting can bury your content…plus its just plain annoying!
Don’t eat the brie? Ha ha gotta luv it!

I would pick number 5 the heaviest from the list. Balance is important and just do what is right is enough.

I really wish more people would follow #2. Images with nothing but words in them on Facebook is a pet peeve of mine. There’s already a little box in which you can type all your witty sayings and share it with the world – you don’t need to present the same information in image form!
Overposting! — that is really one of my pet peeves!. I have blocked some acquaintances before because they update their status almost every minute and that is just so annoying. It is like spamming my newsfeed. lol. Do not abuse FB with some nonsense updates please.
)
You are right Kari, over posting is like spamming. It can get boring and pretty monotonous. No need to over post in FB. You will know when customers like you because they will certainly give you a call.
Everyone should get a chance to read this especially number 4 LOL. Overposting is really stressing, Facebook is a social networking site not a diary ;p. While social networking sites like Facebook grant people the freedom to express themselves and connect in different ways, still, people should learn to be responsible.
That is so true! First time on the site…love the design, keep up the great work!
This is one good post! Probably what many people would like to say to their own Facebook contacts ;p There should be some kind of social media etiquette or guideline. Yes it is a social networking site and anyone is free to do what they want with their own accounts but it should be a reminder to people that whatever they post, unless they are the only one who can see, affects each and every contact they have in a range of degrees or to a certain extent. Moderation and sensitivity are essential.
I certainly agree with you Valerie. If there is spamming in the net, there can also be spamming in FB and that is when there is a flood of posts beings shared every minute. If FB can block over adding of friends in one day, there should also be a limit of posts done in one day. LOL.
This was an entertaining way to describe the “no no’s” of personal Facebook use. What about when it comes to companies using social media? Since it’s become super-important… what are your thoughts? Soon the last companies holding out will join the millions of existing users.
Using technology to maximize occupancy is key. Take a look at our webinar that illustrates how (in the age of echo-boomers, digital natives and social media mavens) the strategic application of technology is a key component to maintaining and raising occupancy levels.

I’m not sure about the timeline and I still hate it. I guess I would agree to not over-posting. Post something with value not something that’s annoying.
I’m not a believer of resolutions but I’ll surely do know how FB will help me get up my business online and thus being unique is my goal too.
Great advice overall and especially on meeting for coffee or tea. There is nothing like the real thing baby. And, if you over post it does get tiresome.
Admit it, we’re just hooked with FB and its perks. But thank you so much for the helpful tips you share in your post. I will always try to remember the number 4 Tip: Stop overposting!!! You know who you are. And we are tired of your 15 posts a day. It’s annoying…if we want to see you that much we’ll call you and meet for coffee. Blocking and unfriending happens.
Facebook has proven to be the best social media tool to use for any business especially for real estate. It gives you a wider reach in terms of clients easily and effectively. Your post mentioned very good suggestions about the responsible use of this tool and it not bad to make these 5 tips as our own resolutions too in our business.
I guess people can no longer whine about the timeline as Facebook is really serious in pursuing this profile change. Though FB profile page does really looks more complicated, for sure we can still get used to it. and why not we just try to take advantage of it for our marketing strategies.
best resolution i have taken this year is i stopped wasting my time on facebook.
